South Lake Tahoe
Tahoe National Forest - Luther Corral
(38.7916278, -120.01046)
Elevation: 8,000 Feet (Cool Crisp Temperatures!)
This is a great POTA location! Other than the cool temps, and being in zero RF noise land, you are likely to think there is nothing unique about this spot, but through extensive research and a trip to the location we have determined it's absolutely perfect for POTA! To learn why we love this seemingly random spot, join us when we discuss it on the Monday Night Nets, or better yet join us on July 12 when we activate this spot in the Tahoe National Forest (US-4566).
Essential Info: 7:30am is the time we will be gathering in Rancho Cordova to caravan. If you want to travel at a different time, we estimate we will be at "the spot" in the Tahoe National Forest from 9:30am to 1:30pm. We estimate those who caravan back will return to Rancho Cordova by about 3:30pm.
Caravan Gathering Place: McDonalds at 12190 Tributary Point Dr, Rancho Cordova, 95670
Getting to "the Spot" in the forest: Getting there is rather easy, it is just a few hundred feet off highway 89. The challenge is knowing where along highway 89 the small dirt parking area is. There is no street address and there are no markers on the highway. It is easy to drive right by "the spot", so you will need to use GPS and/or APRS. Google street view and satellite aerial views will be helpful. GPS coordinates are provided at the top of this page, and clicking on the two images below will show you two different navigational maps. Another great way to find "the spot" is to join the caravan.
What To Bring: Chair, lunch, drinks, sunblock, bug spray, layered clothing for hot and cold weather, and 2-meter radio (primary simplex frequency: 146.520 & secondary 146.535). Weather at this elevation can change rapidly and unpredictably, so prepare for extremes. Although the area is some-what shaded and I am hoping for few to no bugs, its always good to be prepared. There are no picnic tables, this is undeveloped forest land. Optional but desirable items you may consider bringing are: EZ-Up sun shade, table, HF radio station, sun glasses, snacks, and everything else a well prepared Amateur Radio Operator can think of, including the kitchen sink and grand piano. No need to bring vault toilets, they are available nearby at Luther Campground.
